![]() In order to start to understand how Ringu (1998) impacted on both Japanese and American cinema it is important to discuss its origins. I will be looking at America in particular as this is where all the subsequent Japanese remakes emerged from. We will then see how it fared across the water and what (if any) influence it had in the west. Moving on from its origins, we will look at Ringu’s (1998) triumph in Japan and how it sparked a boom of films subcategorised as ‘J-horror’. After a cinematic slump in Japan, Ringu (1998) raised the profile of Japanese film for the first time since the 1960’s, but did it change eastern cinema and how did it impact on the west? To answer these questions I will be looking at the origin of Ringu (1998) and what elements make it so successful, this will help to understand both its domestic and international impact. Its success started off a horror boom in the east that still continues today.
